What to Expect When Working with a Functional Nutritionist

Taryn Mattern

Functional Nutritionist

Are you tired of feeling stuck in a cycle of frustrating symptoms, vague answers, and ineffective treatments? If you’ve ever thought, “There has to be a better way to approach my health,” you’re not alone. For so many women, traditional healthcare falls short of providing the answers and support they need to truly feel better. That’s where working with a functional nutritionist can change everything.

At Healthfully Nourished, I specialize in helping women uncover the root causes of their health challenges—whether it’s persistent fatigue, gut issues, hormonal imbalances, infertility or anxiety—and create personalized solutions that lead to real, lasting change.

In this article, I’ll break down exactly what it’s like to work with a functional nutritionist, answer some common FAQs, and show you how this approach can transform your health.

What Is Functional Nutrition?

Functional nutrition focuses on uncovering and addressing the root causes of your symptoms, rather than just treating them at the surface level. It’s a holistic, science-backed approach that looks at your body as an interconnected system where everything—nutrition, stress, sleep, gut health, hormones, and even your environment—plays a role in how you feel.

Where conventional medicine often aims to manage symptoms with medications, functional nutrition digs deeper to understand why those symptoms are happening and how to resolve them from the inside out.

What to Expect When Working with a Functional Nutritionist

Here’s a detailed look at what working with me as your functional nutritionist looks like:

1. A Deep Dive Into Your Health History

Our first step is a comprehensive conversation about your health history. I want to know everything—your symptoms, lifestyle, stress levels, past diagnoses, medications, family history, diet, and even your sleep patterns.

This isn’t your typical 10-minute doctor’s appointment. We take the time to connect the dots, uncover patterns, and start to build a clear picture of what’s going on in your body.

Why It Matters: Your symptoms don’t happen in isolation, and understanding your full story helps me uncover the root causes behind what’s been holding you back.

2. Functional Lab Testing

Traditional lab work often misses key imbalances because it relies on standard ranges that aren’t always tailored to optimal health. In functional nutrition, we use functional labs to dig deeper and find what’s really going on beneath the surface.

Here are some of the tests we might use:

  • Comprehensive Stool Tests to assess gut health, microbiome imbalances, and signs of inflammation.

  • Hormone Panels to evaluate cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid health.

  • Micronutrient Testing to uncover nutrient deficiencies like magnesium, B vitamins, or omega-3s.

  • Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis to identify your mineral status, and to assess if there are any heavy metals contributing to symptoms.

Why It Matters: These tests provide a detailed roadmap to help us create a plan tailored specifically to your body’s needs.

3. I Look at OPTIMAL Ranges

Here's something that sets functional medicine apart - we look at lab ranges differently. While conventional medicine uses ranges designed to detect disease, I use "optimal" ranges that show us where your body truly thrives. Think about it - conventional ranges are based on population averages, including people who might not be at their healthiest. I want better for you!

Let me break this down with some real examples I see in my practice:

  • Thyroid Health: Conventional docs say TSH between 0.5-4.5 mIU/L is "normal." But in my practice, I look for 1.0-2.0 mIU/L. Fun fact: TSH isn't actually a thyroid hormone - it's a pituitary hormone that talks to your thyroid! This tighter range helps us catch subtle thyroid issues that might be causing your fatigue or unexplained weight changes.

  • Vitamin D: Most doctors are happy with levels at 30 ng/mL, but I aim for 50-80 ng/mL with my clients. Why? Because this sweet spot supports your immune system, mood, and bone health so much better!

  • Blood Sugar: Conventional labs say fasting glucose under 100 mg/dL is fine. But in my practice, I get curious when it's above 85 mg/dL. Catching these subtle shifts early helps us prevent bigger issues like insulin resistance down the road.

  • Magnesium: Most doctors only look at serum magnesium (1.7-2.2 mg/dL), but I dig deeper with RBC magnesium testing, aiming for 6.0-6.5 mg/dL. This helps us spot magnesium issues that might be behind your muscle cramps, anxiety, or sleep struggles.

Why It Matters: By looking at these more precise ranges, I can spot potential issues before they become bigger problems. It's all about being proactive with your health, not reactive. This approach helps my clients feel their absolute best, not just "normal"!

4. Personalized Nutrition and Lifestyle Plan

Forget one-size-fits-all recommendations. Based on your lab results and health goals, I’ll create a customized plan that addresses your unique needs. This might include:

  • Nutrition Guidance: What to eat, how to balance your meals, and how to incorporate foods that heal (and avoid foods that trigger symptoms).

  • Supplement Recommendations: Targeted support to replenish nutrients, support gut health, balance hormones, or reduce inflammation.

  • Lifestyle Adjustments: Stress management, sleep hygiene, gentle movement, and practical ways to create a healthier environment & to support your body in the healing process.

Why It Matters: Your plan is designed to fit into your real life. It’s actionable, realistic, and tailored to your body and your goals.

4. Ongoing Support and Adjustments

Healing takes time, and you don’t have to do it alone. The healing journey can feel overwhelming and sometimes lonely, but having dedicated support makes all the difference. When working together over several months, you'll have someone who truly understands that some days are harder than others, and who will be there to track your progress, troubleshoot challenges, and adjust your plan as your body begins to heal.

What makes this approach special is the understanding that healing isn't just about following a plan - it's about having someone in your corner throughout the entire process.

The journey to better health isn't linear, but with consistent support, you'll stay on track and feel empowered through every step of the way. Having a dedicated professional means having someone who not only monitors your progress but also understands the emotional aspects of your healing journey, celebrating your victories, offering compassionate guidance during setbacks, and keeping you motivated as you work toward your health goals.

Common FAQs About Working with a Functional Nutritionist

How is this different from working with a traditional dietitian?

While a dietitian may focus primarily on calories and macronutrients, a functional nutritionist takes a broader, root-cause approach. We look at the bigger picture, incorporating gut health, hormones, lifestyle, and even stress into your plan.

Will I have to give up all my favorite foods?

Absolutely not. My goal isn’t to make your life harder—it’s to help you find balance, healthy alternatives and have you feeling good without feeling restricted. Together, we’ll find ways to nourish your body while still enjoying your meals and favorite treats.

What kinds of symptoms or conditions can you help with?

Functional nutrition is especially effective for:

  • Gut issues (bloating, IBS, constipation, diarrhea)

  • Hormonal imbalances (irregular cycles, PMS, menopause symptoms)

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Fertility challenges

  • Anxiety or brain fog

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Thyroid dysfunction

  • Blood sugar imbalances

  • Persistent weight challenges

How long does it take to see results?

Every body is different, but most clients start noticing improvements within the first few weeks. Long-term healing takes time, and we’ll celebrate small wins along the way.

Why Work with Healthfully Nourished?

I’ve been in your shoes. I know what it’s like to feel like your body is working against you, to feel unheard by traditional healthcare providers, and to just want someone to tell you what’s actually going on.

That’s why I’m so passionate about functional nutrition. It’s not just about fixing symptoms—it’s about helping you feel empowered, energized, and connected to your body again.

You don’t have to navigate this journey alone. If you’re ready to stop guessing and start feeling better, I’m here to help. Together, we’ll uncover the root causes of your symptoms and create a personalized plan to help you heal from the inside out.

I'm  Ashley, from Texas, USA. I had been in a relationship with a guy and we had unprotected sex for the first time and within a day i got a big bump on the crease of my thigh and vagina. After a few days it began to hurt more and more. I told him to take a picture of it for me, and it looked like open sores, like bugs were biting off my skin or something. So I went to the ER and they said genital herpes. I was soooo depressed. My boyfriend and I cried. He cried for me, but he had no idea he had it too. The next day, the same thing happens to him. At…
